Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission

Develop, fund, and implement a program to address onsite wastewater treatment systems in Malibu

Buy-in from homeowners, businesses and local politicians, as well as approval from state and regional water boards

What We Did

To make this project a success, we needed to bring together a diverse group of regional stakeholders, including the City of Malibu, elected officials, the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, the City and County of Los Angeles, nonprofits like Heal the Bay, home owners associations and local businesses. We helped the stakeholders form a commission that that explored all aspects of the regionally sensitive issue of wastewater treatment. We then guided the commission to develop a four-phase plan that tackled the issue and secured funding to carry out the project.

The project was fully funded by an $800,000 Clean Beach Initiative grant that was implemented on time and on budget.
